Legalization of a power of attorney issued abroad

A power of attorney can be used in Northern Cyprus only in three cases:

1. If the power of attorney was issued and notarized in Northern Cyprus, the personal presence of the grantor is mandatory. It should also be noted that the power of attorney must be certified not only by a notary but also by a lawyer. In some cases, these roles can be performed by the same person. After notarial or legal certification, the power of attorney must be legalized by the tax authorities.

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus maintains official diplomatic relations only with Turkey. With some countries, Northern Cyprus maintains unofficial relations through a system of "representative offices."

2. If the power of attorney was issued in a TRNC representative office, the list of countries with Northern Cyprus representative offices can be found on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs: https://mfa.gov.ct.tr/consular-info/missions-abroad/. It is important to remember that after preparing the power of attorney, its original must be sent to Northern Cyprus for further legalization.

3. If the power of attorney was issued at a Turkish embassy or consulate, you can find the list of countries where Turkish representative offices are located on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkey: https://www.mfa.gov.tr/turkish-representations.en.mfa. Do not forget that after the power of attorney is issued, its original must be sent to Northern Cyprus for subsequent legalization.

To legalize a document issued by the authorized structures of Northern Cyprus or Turkey, you should:

• Ensure the document contains all necessary requisites
• Certify the document at the Turkish embassy in Northern Cyprus
• Certify the document at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Northern Cyprus
• Certify the document at the tax authorities
