A power of attorney allows you to authorise another person to sign documents and handle matters on your behalf. In Northern Cyprus (TRNC), it is drawn up in Turkish or in two languages. We explain where you can arrange a power of attorney, what types are available and what it can include.

What is a power of attorney in two languages and where can you arrange one?

Notaries usually draw up a power of attorney in Turkish or in Turkish and English: these are the languages notaries speak.

Why Turkish is mandatory in a power of attorney

Turkish is mandatory and takes precedence, just as it does in sale and purchase agreements. The main official language of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is Turkish.

What you can do under a power of attorney

A power of attorney can include various powers. It can authorise someone to:

• sign documents;
• register sale and purchase agreements;
• submit applications to the Council of Ministers;
• manage bank accounts;
• sell movable property;
• obtain documents, such as giriş-çıkış, from the police;
• represent you before government authorities;
• negotiate with construction companies, counterparties and agents.

Types of powers of attorney

A power of attorney is not always a general power of attorney. It can be issued solely for a purchase, without the right to sell.

A general power of attorney is needed if, for example, you want someone acting under it to sell your property, rent it out or take delivery of it from the developer when construction is completed.

How a power of attorney is arranged

A power of attorney is drawn up in your personal presence. You can arrange it at the DeJure Consulting office. It is issued immediately.

Validity of a power of attorney

A power of attorney can be issued for one year or for an indefinite period. No other periods are available. We recommend an indefinite power of attorney because some processes take quite a long time.

Who can be appointed under a power of attorney?

A power of attorney can be granted to DeJure Consulting and its employees. You can choose one of our employees or grant it solely to the lawyer.

You can also grant a power of attorney to a relative or someone close to you: your wife, sister, son, mother or father. An important point: where a power of attorney is granted by one individual to another who does not have a work visa, the tax authority may refuse to certify it because that person is not entitled to carry out some of the activities specified in it.
